Meet the musicians!
Sarah Kervin couldn’t decide between her love for piano, saxophone, and singing, so prior to landing in New York City and now the Maine seacoast she attended two universities, South Carolina and North Texas, to study and play a wide range of genresfrom opera to jazz to pop to salsa. Sarah has received international recognition as a performer and songwriter, including: winner of The Recording Festival, winner of the Indie International Songwriting Competition, finalist in the NewSong Competition at Lincoln Center, semi-finalist in the American Traditions Vocal Competition in Savannah, winner of six Downbeat Student Music Awards, winner of the Jazz Education Network Composition Award, and recipient of research grants in Vocal Pedagogy from the Magellan Foundation. She has shared the stage with great artists such as Jon Hendricks, the Manhattan Transfer, Ben Folds, the Fort Worth Symphony, and Howard University’s Afro Blue, and brings this knowledge to bear as an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music. Taylor O'Donnell is well-known for her exploratory use of vocal color and texture, her sincere delivery in her musical stylings, and her wonderful voice. She is a contemporary vocalist, educator, and conductor who uses her roots in R&B, folk, jazz, rock, and classical music to communicate her musical dialogue. Growing up in Colorado and living all over the country from Florida to Maine, her performing experience has taken her from playing with her own jazz trio on cruise ships and throughout New England to performing as a guest artist with symphony orchestras. Her musical diversity informs her deep love for vocal improvisation and for exploring a plethora of sounds and colors to connect more deeply to her audience, and fuels her teaching at Berklee College of Music, University of Southern Maine, and Portsmouth Music and Arts Center. David Thorne Scott is an entertainer whose beautiful voice and creativity have thrilled audiences in venues large and small. His passion for bringing a modern edge to the classics of the Great American Songbook, as well as his original songs, earned his album "Shade" a "Top 5 CD of the Year" by the Jazz Education Journal. Cadence Magazine said: "He phrases like a saxophone player and is as slippery and hip as the young Mel Tormé." Herb Wong, one of the West Coast's leading jazz experts, wrote “I haven’t been this moved by a performance of ‘For All We Know’ since Carmen McRae.” A full professor at Berklee College of Music, Scott’s upcoming album “Thornewood” features his intricate original music as well as an engaging combination of jazz and Americana elements, with guest appearances by Paula Cole and Peter Eldridge. Mark Shilansky is an "inventive, modern mainstream Jazz pianist" (Jon Garelick, Boston Globe) who provides melodic improvisation and infectious compositions on his own and to a host of jazz luminaries, such as Luciana Souza and the New York Voices, as well as to the classroom, as a professor at Berklee College of Music and the University of New Hampshire. Shilansky’s six recordings as a leader include 2007’s “Join the Club,” a mostly Latin Jazz affair featuring David Bowie's saxist Donny McCaslin, and 2013’s “Fugue Mill,” the eponymous debut of his Jazz/Bluegrass/Celtic project featuring violin phenom Sara Caswell. Mark is also featured on over 60 recordings as a keyboardist, vocalist, composer/arranger, or producer. (markshilansky.com)
