Tenor saxophonist Craig Handy, an alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and vocalist Betty Carter’s ensembles, has worked with Abdullah Ibrahim, Wynton Marsalis and The Cookers, and recorded a respectable amount of records as a leader, including his 2013 release, Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, his ingenious mashup of organ master Jimmy Smith’s compositions played in the style of a New Orleans second line parade. The funky swing that will come from this band will give a whole new meaning to Smith’s famous hit, “Walk on the Wild Side.”
